Reconstruction works are underway on the section between Medjurovo and Belotinac, within the modernization of the Niš - Brestovac railway. In the middle of March 2022, work was done on the lower and upper lines of the railway, as well as at the Belotinac railway station. The Slovakian logistics company Budamar Group, Tatravagónka and the Austrian company Innofreight signed a framework agreement of EUR 2 billion value under which TŽV Gredelj will manufacture and supply InnoWaggons for the next ten years. Infrastructure upgrades in Slovenia will slow down rail freight. The Ljubljana-Brezovica right track of the line will be closed until 30 June. Turkish-German logistics company Cobantur Boltas has launched its first intermodal train connecting the Halkali terminal in Istanbul with the DUSS terminal in Munich. The first trip to Istanbul from the DUSS terminal was realized on January 21. The Czech company CD Cargo Adria, which operates in Croatia, recently started transporting containers on the route Luka Rijeka-Belgrade. As it was announced at the end of January, it is about four pairs of trains a week for the company Maersk, which started this service. The transport is performed with the use of CD Cargo wagons, while the start of work with its own locomotives is expected in May 2022 at the latest.

The train for testing the new high-speed railway line Belgrade - Novi Sad reached a speed of 201,5 km/h. Testing of new railway began on January 17 with arrival of special track recording vehicle of the German railway company "Deutsche Bahn Systemtechnik". This phase of testing will last until February 4, 2022.
First intermodal Istanbul-Munich train of Cobantur Boltas, a Turkish-German logistics company, departed on January 21, connecting the DUSS terminal in Munich with the Halkali terminal in Istanbul. Trains will run with a weekly roundtrip between the two destinations covering a distance of 2,000 kilometres crossing central Europe, the Balkans and countries like Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria before reaching Turkey.
The main construction work on second track of the Divaca – Koper railway section officially started in early May 2021. Work should be completed in 2025, and the line should be put into service a year later. In these days the contractors reached the first 1.000 meters of excavated tunnel length. Route is 27 kilometers long, and three quarters of the route will be tunnelled.

Kosovo Railways Infrastructure signed a EUR 48 milion contract for the modernisation and construction of the second track of Fushë Kosovë – Mitrovicë line. The project involves the reconstruction of 148 km of rail line and 5 stations crossing the entire country from north to south. The project will increase speed from 20 km/h to 100 km/h as well as freight axle load to 22.5 tonnes.

In 2021 Infrastructure of the Serbian Railways worked on the construction and reconstruction of 450 kilometers of railway. 2022 began with works on on the reconstruction and modernization of about 300 kilometers of railways and the preparation of documentation for another 720 kilometers of railways.
Serbia Cargo JSC plans to purchase 4 new diesel diesel locomotives with an EU 5 engine, or hybrid locomotives (diesel engine + batteries). Procurement funds amount to EUR 7.5 milion from a European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) loan. Hybrid locomotives have an advantage in procurement compared to diesel locomotives with an EU 5 engine.

The construction of the Novi Sad-Kelebija high-speed railway, within the Belgrade-Budapest high-speed railway project, began on November 22. This railway line is part of the corridor between Belgrade and Thessaloniki, which in turn is part of the Pan-European corridor X. Serbia and the European Commission signed an agreement in London confirming that the seat of the Western Balkans Transport Community will be in Belgrade. The agreement was signed as part of the Western Balkans Summit, held on July 9-10, 2018, in the UK capital.

Electrification works of TCDD continues very fast. 2317 km of Turkish conventional rail network is electrified. By 2023, TCDD aims to have 100% electrification.
A train moved with a CIM between two domestic stations in Turkey for the first time. In cooperation with MOS, TCDD and Turkish Customs, a new procedure is tested in Turkey.
